UCAT — Reading previous papers properly

Past UCAT papers are not released, but the official preparation resources are extensive: a tour tutorial for the test tools, a question tutorial for each subtest, question banks by subtest and several full timed practice tests in the live interface. The consortium, the Medical Schools Council and the Dental Schools Council do not endorse any commercial course, and the official tests are the only ones calibrated against real candidates.

Working through the official material

  1. Tour the tools, then the question tutorials Learn the calculator, the flagging and the navigation before any timed work.
  2. Question banks by subtest, untimed then timed Accuracy first, then the per-question pace — 30 seconds in Verbal Reasoning, about a minute in Decision Making, 43 seconds in Quantitative Reasoning, 22 seconds in Situational Judgement.
  3. Full practice tests in the final weeks Two hours without a pause, in order, to build the stamina the real sitting needs.
  4. Compare with the published deciles Preliminary statistics appear in mid-September; last cycle’s means and deciles are on the test-statistics page.
