CMAT — Using mock tests as a measurement

The most common CMAT preparation error is to practise with CAT-style mocks and assume the knowledge sections will look after themselves. They will not — general awareness is cumulative and innovation and entrepreneurship is content that has to be learned. Practising the real five-section paper makes the gap visible early enough to fix.

What to track

  • Knowledge section accuracy — general awareness and entrepreneurship together. The most improvable part of your score.
  • Time left at the end — with nearly two minutes per question you should not be rushed; if you are, pacing needs work.
  • Attempt range — the forgiving marking scheme justifies attempting more than in a harsher paper.
  • Aptitude section accuracy — the conventional diagnostic.

A mock routine for a five-section paper

  1. Include all five sections, always A mock that omits general awareness and entrepreneurship is a CAT mock wearing a CMAT label, and it will tell you nothing about the sections that most differentiate scores here.
  2. Score the two knowledge sections separately They improve on different timescales — one is a short project, the other a long habit — and folding them into a single total hides which is progressing.
  3. Check time remaining With nearly two minutes a question you should finish with time in hand. If you do not, pacing needs attention before anything else does.
  4. Review your attempt count The forgiving marking scheme justifies attempting more than in a harsher paper. Candidates carrying CAT discipline typically under-attempt by a noticeable margin.
  5. Spend the leftover time verifying Rehearse it in mocks so it becomes the default on the day rather than an idea you had beforehand.

Track the entrepreneurship score as a project with an end point. Unlike general awareness, which climbs slowly and indefinitely, this section should rise sharply over a few weeks of systematic study and then plateau near the top — and when it does, the project is finished and the time should go elsewhere. Recognising completion is unusual in competitive preparation and this is one of the few places it applies.

The knowledge sections are where the marginal mark is cheapest

Raising your quantitative percentile requires months of practice against candidates who have been preparing for a year. Raising your entrepreneurship score requires a few weeks against candidates who have prepared for none. When deciding where the next ten hours go, that comparison should usually settle it.
