CMAT — How to prepare
Consider where the marginal mark is cheapest. Improving your quantitative percentile requires months of practice against strong competition. Covering the innovation and entrepreneurship section properly requires a few weeks of reading on bounded material that most of your competition has skipped. For a CMAT candidate, that comparison should determine where the last two months go.
A plan for CMAT specifically
- From three months out — daily general awareness. With business and economy weighted more heavily than a general competitive-exam habit would.
- Two months out — innovation and entrepreneurship, systematically. Concepts, schemes, funding, notable ventures. Bounded material; a few weeks covers it.
- Throughout — conventional aptitude preparation. Quantitative, reasoning and language, shared with any other management entrance.
- Two months out — grammar and vocabulary work. CMAT language is more rule-based than CAT verbal.
- One month out — full five-section mocks. Including the knowledge sections, so the gaps show while there is time.
- Use the generous timing. Nearly two minutes a question allows verification; practise using it rather than rushing.
Where CMAT candidates leave marks
- Skipping innovation and entrepreneurship — a full section of learnable content that most competitors ignore.
- Neglecting general awareness — cumulative, and impossible to assemble in the final week.
- Attempting too conservatively — the four-to-one marking is forgiving and rewards wider attempts.
- Practising only CAT-style mocks — which omit the two sections that most differentiate CMAT scores.
- The long habit — general awareness
- A daily business newspaper from three months out, with a running note of business and corporate news, economic developments, appointments and awards. Cumulative, uncompressible, and the reason to start early.
- The short project — innovation and entrepreneurship
- Two to three weeks of systematic reading against a topic list built from past papers, placed about two months out so that it is complete before mock season and needs only light revision thereafter.
- The shared base — aptitude
- Whatever you are doing for CAT or any other management entrance. No CMAT-specific adjustment is needed beyond a few weeks of grammar and vocabulary work for the language section.
- The attempt policy — decided in advance
- Wider than a CAT candidate’s instincts allow. Four-to-one marking with a generous clock rewards attempting anything you can narrow at all.
The framing worth carrying through a CMAT preparation is that this is a paper where the competition has systematically neglected two of the five sections. Almost every candidate sitting it has prepared the aptitude sections seriously, because that preparation was already underway for other examinations. Very few have prepared the knowledge sections at all. That asymmetry, rather than any advantage in aptitude, is where a strong CMAT percentile actually comes from.
One reading habit serves several examinations
The daily business newspaper that covers CMAT general awareness also covers XAT general knowledge, MAT’s business environment section, and the interviews that follow all of them. For a candidate sitting multiple management entrances, it is a single habit paying into four places, which makes it easily the best-value twenty minutes in the whole preparation.
