SBI PO — Study material for this exam
Work the reasoning notes with a pen in hand. The layered puzzles SBI sets are solved by representation — a clear diagram that holds every constraint at once — and representation is a manual skill that improves only by doing it. Reading a solved puzzle teaches almost nothing; drawing the grid yourself teaches the whole thing.
A daily routine
- One business newspaper, read properly rather than skimmed.
- Three puzzles, at least one of an unfamiliar type.
- Two data interpretation sets, timed, with the structure read before any calculation.
- One editorial analysed for argument and tone, which serves both the English section and the essay.
- Reasoning — representation before deduction
- The layered puzzles SBI sets are solved by drawing the arrangement well. Keep one consistent notation for positions, directions and unknowns so that the representation becomes automatic, and practise writing it down before reasoning about it.
- Data analysis — read the structure first
- Thirty seconds understanding what a set contains before any calculation is the highest-return habit in this section. It identifies the fast questions, exposes the trap in missing-data sets, and prevents the most common loss, which is calculating against the wrong base.
- English — inference and tone
- Grammar rules cover a shrinking share of the section. The larger part rewards reading well-argued prose regularly enough that recognising an author’s position becomes ordinary rather than effortful.
- Awareness — banking with an economic frame
- Not a list of facts but an understanding of how the system fits together: what the regulator does, how policy transmits, what the instruments are for. That framing is what the essay and the interview ask for, and it makes the objective questions easier as a by-product.
The editorial-a-day habit deserves singling out for this examination specifically, because it pays into four components at once. Read one properly — not skimmed — and note the argument, the evidence offered, and what a reasonable person might say against it. That is comprehension practice, vocabulary in context, essay material and interview preparation from a single fifteen-minute activity, which is a better rate of return than any subject-specific study on your shelf.
Avoid template collections
Material that promises a fixed method for every question type is well suited to IBPS papers and poorly suited to this one. SBI sets are designed to sit slightly outside the templates, and a candidate whose preparation is entirely template-based has no fallback when the template does not fit. Prefer material that explains why a method works.
What to read, given a paper that rewards handling unfamiliar formats.| Section | Read this | Do not spend time on |
|---|
| Reasoning | Puzzles and arrangements in variety rather than in volume of one type, plus critical reasoning and data sufficiency. | Drilling a single puzzle family. This paper varies its formats deliberately. |
|---|
| Quantitative aptitude | Data interpretation in unfamiliar presentations — caselets, mixed graphs, missing-data sets — plus arithmetic to completion. | Standard DI sets alone, which do not rehearse the adaptation this paper asks for. |
|---|
| English language | Long and argumentative reading passages, plus the newer question forms this paper favours over straightforward grammar items. | Only rule-based grammar practice. The English here leans towards comprehension and reasoning about text. |
|---|
| Data analysis and interpretation, at mains level | Extended, multi-part sets worked to time, since the mains treats this as a section of its own. | Assuming prelims-level DI transfers directly. |
|---|
| Descriptive and group exercise | Timed writing on economy, banking and social policy, and forming actual views on current issues you can defend aloud. | Memorised content for a discussion, which is visible immediately. |
