- Data Analysis and Interpretation
- Tabular, bar, line, pie and mixed graphs, caselets, missing-data sets, data sufficiency, data comparison, and probability and permutation questions embedded in data contexts. SBI sets are known for unusual presentations — arrangements you have not seen before, requiring you to work out the structure before you can start calculating. Underneath them sits ordinary arithmetic: percentage, ratio, average and the standard word-problem topics.
- Reasoning Ability
- Complex puzzles and seating arrangements with layered constraints, machine input-output, syllogism including possibility-based conclusions, inequality with coded relationships, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, coding-decoding in newer formats, data sufficiency, and the critical reasoning group — statement and assumption, inference, strengthening and weakening arguments, and course of action.
- English Language
- Reading comprehension with a strong emphasis on inference, tone and author intent rather than direct retrieval; cloze tests in connected-passage form; para jumbles; error spotting; sentence improvement and rearrangement; word usage and word swap; connectors; and paragraph completion. This is the section where SBI diverges most from other banking papers.
- General, Economy and Banking Awareness
- The Indian banking system and its regulatory architecture, Reserve Bank functions and monetary policy instruments, money and capital markets, financial institutions and international bodies, government schemes, budget and economic survey content, banking terminology and abbreviations, and current affairs of the preceding several months weighted towards banking and economic news.
- Computer Aptitude
- Computer fundamentals, hardware and software, operating systems, MS Office, networking and internet basics, database concepts, shortcut keys and abbreviations, and cyber security. Combined with reasoning in the mains.
- Descriptive Paper
- One letter — formal or informal — and one essay, generally on banking, economic, technological or social themes. Assessed on structure, argument, clarity and language accuracy within a tight thirty-minute window.
The practical implication is that SBI PO rewards understanding over pattern recognition. A candidate who has learned twenty puzzle templates will struggle when the twenty-first has a constraint none of them had; a candidate who has learned how to represent constraints on paper will not. The same is true of data interpretation, where reading an unfamiliar structure calmly is the actual skill being tested.
The syllabus lists topics; SBI examines dispositions. Two candidates can have covered the same list and meet the paper very differently — one looking for the question type they practised, the other reading the set on its own terms and working out what it wants. The second candidate is what this syllabus is written for, and it is why a topic-by-topic checklist, completed diligently, is a weaker preparation for SBI PO than for any other banking examination.
