SBI PO — How to prepare

The most common trajectory in SBI PO preparation is a candidate who scores well in IBPS-style mocks, meets an SBI paper, and finds their pattern library does not fit. The correction is not more practice of the same kind — it is deliberately practising with unfamiliar material, and building the habit of deriving an approach rather than recalling one.

A plan that suits the exam

  1. From day one — banking and economic awareness, daily. Sixty marks in the mains, cumulative, and impossible to build late. Read a business newspaper rather than only a digest.
  2. Months one to three — arithmetic and reasoning fundamentals. The foundation SBI tests in unfamiliar dress. Depth here is what makes adaptability possible.
  3. From month two — deliberately unfamiliar practice. Seek out sets and puzzle formats you have not met. Being uncomfortable in practice is the point.
  4. From month two — English through reading, daily. Editorials and long-form journalism. Inference-based comprehension is built by reading argument, not by drilling grammar.
  5. From month three — descriptive writing weekly, timed. And at least some of it written immediately after a long objective session.
  6. From month three — think about the final stage. Follow banking and economic developments well enough to hold a view. Practise speaking a structured argument aloud.
  7. Final weeks — full mocks in both formats, with triage discipline. Measuring set selection as carefully as score.

What separates selected candidates

  • Comfort with unfamiliarity — the ability to meet a strange set and work it out rather than freeze.
  • Genuine reading habit — which serves the English section, the awareness section, the essay and the interview simultaneously.
  • Ruthless set selection — knowing what to leave is worth more than being able to solve everything slowly.
  • Preparation for the interview stage — started months earlier, not in the fortnight after the mains result.
Deliberately unfamiliar practice
From month two, make a point of working question types you have not seen — from other examinations, from older papers, from any source that frames things differently. The skill being built is not coverage but composure when the framing is new, and it cannot be built on material you have already patterned.
Reading as core preparation, not enrichment
A properly read business newspaper feeds the awareness section, the comprehension section, the essay and the interview. For SBI PO more than any other banking examination, the reading habit is the highest-leverage single activity available.
Triage as a trained skill
Set selection is not a personality trait. It is trained by scanning drills, hard per-set ceilings and post-mock review, and candidates who treat it as something they will do properly on the day arrive without it.

The characteristic SBI PO failure is worth describing precisely because it is so avoidable. A candidate prepares thoroughly on IBPS-style material, scores well in IBPS-style mocks, meets an SBI paper with unfamiliar sets, spends the first ten minutes trying to force familiar methods onto them, and loses the section to time rather than to difficulty. Nothing in that sequence is a knowledge problem. All of it is addressed by practising unfamiliarity on purpose, months in advance.

Start the final stage early

The interview and group exercise reward months of reading and of forming opinions, and the gap between the mains result and the interview is short. Candidates who begin that preparation only after clearing mains are compressing into a fortnight something that was meant to accumulate — and it shows, because rehearsed views sound different from held ones.
