LIC AAO — What the syllabus covers

LIC does not publish a topic-wise syllabus; the section names in the notification and the questions of the 2023 and 2025 papers define it. The lists below are drawn from those papers. The prelims is a speed test of reasoning, arithmetic and English; the mains raises the weight of reasoning and data interpretation to three marks a question and adds two knowledge sections.

Reasoning Ability (prelims 35, mains 90)

  • Puzzles and seating arrangement — floor, box, month and linear or circular arrangements — the largest block in both stages.
  • Syllogism, inequality and coding-decoding — quick prelims marks; the mains versions use coded inequalities and new-pattern coding.
  • Blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking — two to five questions each.
  • Input-output, data sufficiency, logical reasoning — mains-only topics; statement-assumption, course of action and cause-effect appear.

Quantitative Aptitude (prelims 35) and Data Analysis and Interpretation (mains 90)

  • Simplification, approximation and number series — prelims speed questions.
  • Arithmetic — percentages, profit and loss, ratio, averages, time and work, speed and distance, interest, mixtures.
  • Data interpretation — tables, bar and line charts, pie charts, caselets; in the mains, two-variable and missing-data sets and arithmetic-heavy caselets.
  • Quadratic equations and data sufficiency — regular in the mains DI section.

English Language (prelims 30, qualifying) and the descriptive paper (25, qualifying)

  • Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, fillers, para-jumbles, sentence improvement — the objective paper; vocabulary in context is the recurring theme.
  • E-mail and report writing, situation analysis, précis — the descriptive paper, typed on the computer in 30 minutes; the notification names exactly these four forms.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs (mains 60)

  • Last six months of national and international events — appointments, awards, summits, sports, reports and indices.
  • Static GK — Indian polity, geography, history and culture basics; important days; books and authors.
  • Economy and banking news — RBI policy, budget figures, schemes, mergers and financial regulation — this section overlaps with the insurance section.

Insurance and Financial Market Awareness (mains 60)

  • Life Insurance Corporation — its founding in 1956, structure, products and plans, the 2022 listing, subsidiaries and key figures.
  • Insurance concepts — premium, sum assured, riders, surrender, nomination, assignment, underwriting, reinsurance, bancassurance, ULIPs, annuities.
  • IRDAI and regulation — the Insurance Act and IRDA Act, IRDAI’s functions, recent regulations, Bima Sugam and Bima Trinity, ombudsman scheme, FDI limits.
  • Financial markets and institutions — RBI, SEBI, PFRDA, NABARD, SIDBI, stock exchanges, mutual funds, bond and money markets, the budget and economic survey headline numbers.
  • Government schemes — PMJJBY, PMSBY, Ayushman Bharat, Atal Pension Yojana, PMFBY and the like — coverage, premium and eligibility.

Specialist streams

Actuarial, CA, CS, Legal and Insurance Specialist mains replace the fourth section with professional knowledge of the stream; the specialist notification carries a subject outline for each.
