RRB JE — Using mock tests as a measurement
The pacing problem in CBT 2 is specific: technical questions take longer than general-awareness questions, and a candidate who works through the paper in printed order can reach the technical section with insufficient time for the part carrying two thirds of the marks. Practising the paper in its real proportions is how you find the order of attempt that protects those minutes.
What to measure
- Minutes spent on Technical Abilities — it should dominate your two hours, as it dominates the marks.
- Technical accuracy — with a third of a mark deducted, uncertain technical answers are expensive.
- Time on the small sections — computers and environment should take very few minutes; if not, you are over-thinking twenty easy marks.
- Repeated technical errors by topic — in a technical paper these indicate gaps in understanding, and need the textbook rather than more questions.
Getting a real signal from a CBT 2 mock
- Insist on the right composition A hundred technical questions in your own discipline and fifty across the four supporting sections. A general railway mock is a well-made test of the wrong thing.
- Plan the two hours before you start Technical questions take longer per question and carry two thirds of the marks. Write down your intended split and compare it with what happened.
- Clear the small sections in minutes Computers and environment should take very little time. If they are absorbing ten minutes each, you are over-thinking twenty marks of shallow content.
- Classify technical errors by cause Wrong formula, right formula misapplied, arithmetic slip, or topic never rebuilt. Four different failures with four different remedies.
- Re-test the repaired topic A short topic set before the next full mock. Confirming a repair is faster and more informative than waiting for it to surface in a total.
The pacing trap in CBT 2 is that technical and general questions carry the same single mark while taking very different amounts of time. A candidate working straight through in question order will find the technical section consuming an unplanned share of the two hours — or, worse, will hurry the technical questions in order to reach general awareness questions worth exactly the same and requiring a fraction of the effort.
Use CBT 1 mocks sparingly
A few timed papers to confirm your pacing at a hundred questions in ninety minutes is sufficient. CBT 1 screens rather than ranks, and every additional mock there is an hour not spent on the technical syllabus that determines your position.
Getting a real signal from JE practice.| Pattern | Cause | Correction |
|---|
| Technical section slow but accurate | Formula reconstruction rather than recall. | Rewrite the formula sheet from memory weekly. |
|---|
| Technical marks concentrated in a few chapters | Coverage narrower than the paper. | Work down the chapter-weight table rather than deepening strong chapters. |
|---|
| Computer and environment blocks conceded | Treated as minor and never studied. | A weekend each. They are among the cheapest marks in the paper. |
|---|
| CBT 1 mocks used as the main measurement | Measuring the screening stage instead of the deciding one. | Use CBT 1 mocks sparingly and practise CBT 2 depth regularly. |
|---|
| Unit and sign errors recurring | A discipline problem rather than a knowledge one. | Redo wrong questions writing units at every line. |
