Notes
RRB JE — Study material for this exam
General study material plays a supporting role in RRB JE. It covers the whole of CBT 1 — which only needs to be cleared — and a third of CBT 2. The efficient approach is to work these notes briskly and return the time saved to the technical subject, which is where your rank is decided.
For the technical section
- Use your diploma or degree textbooks as the primary source rather than a competitive-exam digest.
- Work from the past-paper weighting table rather than from the syllabus order.
- Maintain one handwritten formula sheet per technical subject.
- Revisit each major technical topic twice more before the exam — technical recall decays quickly.
- Discipline textbooks — the primary source
- Your own diploma or degree books, for the hundred technical marks that decide your rank. They carry the derivations, standard values and diagrams that a competitive-exam digest compresses out.
- A handwritten formula sheet — the revision artefact
- One per technical subject, containing only what you personally keep forgetting, built from your errors and revised weekly. In the final fortnight it should be the only technical document you need.
- General notes — for CBT 1 and the supporting sections
- Mathematics, reasoning, science and general awareness at school level, worked to clearing depth and then maintained rather than deepened.
- The two small-section sources
- Basic computers and applications, and environment and pollution control. Shallow, finite, and worth an evening each for twenty marks in the merit paper.
One organising suggestion for the technical work: study in the order your weighting table gives rather than the order the syllabus prints. Syllabi are written to be comprehensive, not prioritised, and a candidate working through one in printed order will spend their freshest months on whatever happens to appear first — which is frequently not what the papers ask about most.
Revisit each technical topic twice more
Technical recall decays faster than aptitude skill, and a subject rebuilt in month two is meaningfully degraded by month six if it is never revisited. Two short returns per major topic — one soon after, one much later — hold considerably more than a single thorough pass, and they cost far less time than rebuilding the topic again.
Reading for a recruitment decided in its technical stage.| Part | Read this | Do not spend time on |
|---|
| CBT 1 general sections | Mathematics, reasoning, general science and general awareness at screening depth. | Heavy investment in a stage whose marks screen rather than decide. |
|---|
| CBT 2 general awareness and physics and chemistry | General awareness including railway material, plus physics and chemistry at the level the second stage sets. | Assuming these repeat CBT 1 content unchanged. |
|---|
| CBT 2 technical abilities | Your discipline’s core subjects, revised from a chapter-weight table built by tagging past papers. | Reading a degree or diploma textbook from chapter one. |
|---|
| Basics of computers and applications | A small, closed and highly examinable block: hardware, software, networking, internet and security terms. | Any depth beyond terminology and function. |
|---|
| Environment and pollution control | The prescribed topics, which are finite and regularly examined. | Skipping it as minor. It is cheap and repeatable marks. |
