NDA Preparation

Prepare for two examinations at once: a school-level written paper, and a five-day assessment of who you are. They need completely different preparation, and they carry the same marks.

NDA — How to prepare

The written half of NDA is genuinely tractable. It draws on class 11 and 12 material, the syllabus is finite, and a candidate who is studying for board examinations is already covering much of it. The half that catches candidates out is the Services Selection Board, which is not a test of preparation in the usual sense — it assesses initiative, cooperation, resilience and clarity, all of which develop over years rather than weeks.

A plan for a school candidate

  1. Use your school syllabus as the base. Class 11 and 12 mathematics, physics and chemistry cover most of what both papers ask. Studying well for boards is studying for NDA.
  2. From the start — general knowledge daily. 400 marks, drawing on science, history, geography and current events. The largest single block in the examination.
  3. From the start — English practice. Grammar and vocabulary; two hundred marks that respond directly to consistent effort.
  4. Months two to four — mathematics to speed. Trigonometry, calculus, analytical geometry and matrices carry the most weight. Practise timed.
  5. From the start — physical fitness, seriously. Running, strength and stamina. The SSB includes outdoor tasks, and the services expect a standard.
  6. From the start — build the SSB attributes. Take responsibility in group settings, read widely, form views, and practise expressing them clearly. This is the real preparation for half the marks.
  7. Two months before — full-length written mocks. Both papers in one day, with negative marking applied.
  8. After the written result — focused SSB preparation. Format familiarisation and mock interviews, on top of the attributes you have been building for months.

What candidates get wrong

  • Treating the SSB as a fortnight’s work — it is 900 marks, equal to the written examination, and it assesses years of formation.
  • Over-weighting mathematics — 300 marks against 600 for the General Ability Test.
  • Neglecting physics and chemistry within general knowledge — they carry more of that section than the name suggests.
  • Leaving fitness until after the written result — the SSB includes outdoor tasks and the medical follows.
  • Not checking wing-specific medical standards early — particularly vision, which differs sharply between the Army, Navy and Air Force wings.
If you are in class 11
You have the most comfortable position available and should use it structurally: keep pace with school mathematics, build the general knowledge habit now while there is no time pressure, and start running. Candidates who begin here rarely need to choose between board examinations and NDA preparation later.
If you are in class 12
The constraint is the board examinations, and the right response is overlap rather than competition. Your mathematics, physics and chemistry preparation serves both. Add general knowledge, English and fitness as small daily habits, and keep full mocks for the period after your boards.
If you have finished school
You have time to prepare properly and should use it on the two things school did not give you — general knowledge breadth and SSB readiness — rather than on re-covering mathematics you have already sat an examination in.

The attribute set the SSB assesses is worth understanding early, because it is built rather than revised: effective intelligence, reasoning, organising ability, initiative, social adaptability, cooperation, sense of responsibility, determination, courage and stamina. None of those is acquired in a fortnight. All of them are developed by the ordinary things a school candidate can start now — taking responsibility in a team, playing a sport seriously, reading beyond the syllabus, and having genuine interests you can talk about.

Physical training is preparation, not recreation

The SSB includes outdoor group tasks and an obstacle course, and a medical examination follows. Running, basic strength work and general stamina should be part of the schedule from the first week alongside study, not a project deferred until after the written result. The gap between the written result and the SSB call is not long enough to build a base from nothing.
