Practice
NDA — Using mock tests as a measurement
The free NDA mock on this site follows the current pattern for both papers. Beyond the score, the two things worth watching are your general knowledge accuracy — the largest single block of marks in the examination — and your fatigue across five hours of testing, which is a real factor on the day and one that only full-length practice reveals.
What to look at afterwards
- General knowledge accuracy — 400 marks. Improvements here move your total further than equivalent gains in mathematics.
- Mathematics chapters that repeat as errors — a finite syllabus means every recurring weakness is fixable.
- Your English score — two hundred learnable marks that candidates often leave partly on the table.
- Performance in the second paper versus the first — a drop indicates stamina, and the fix is more full-length practice rather than more study.
Alongside written practice, begin preparing for the Services Selection Board. Physical fitness, reading, participation in team activities and honest self-reflection are the preparation that stage rewards, and all of them take months.
Reading an NDA mock properly
- Score the two papers separately A combined total hides which of the two is actually holding you back, and with a three-to-six mark split between them the answer is rarely the one candidates assume.
- Break general knowledge into its parts Physics, chemistry, history, geography, polity, current events. Four hundred marks is far too large a block to analyse as one number, and the weak part is usually specific.
- Count unattempted mathematics questions If there is a tail of untouched questions, the constraint is pace rather than knowledge, and more practice sets will help where more theory will not.
- Check your English separately Two hundred marks, mechanical, and highly responsive to practice. Candidates rarely track it and frequently leave marks in it.
- Compare first-session and second-session accuracy A consistent drop is a stamina signal and calls for more full-day practice rather than more study.
For the Services Selection Board, the two components that respond most to advance practice are the officer intelligence rating test and the picture perception and description exercise, because they form the screening stage and because both are recognisably test-like. Working through OIR-style questions and writing timed picture stories is genuinely useful preparation. The psychological tests and group tasks reward something different — a settled sense of your own views, some experience of working in groups, and physical confidence — which is built over months of ordinary life rather than through drills.
What SSB preparation is not
It is not memorising model answers or rehearsing a personality. Assessors see a large number of coached candidates and are practised at spotting the gap between a prepared response and a consistent one — and consistency across five days of different exercises is precisely what the process is designed to measure. Reading widely, staying fit, forming real opinions and being able to explain your own choices is the preparation that survives contact with the board.
What an NDA written practice result should tell you.| Observation | Interpretation | Action |
|---|
| Mathematics slow | Standard results being reconstructed rather than recalled. | Write the formula sheet from memory on a schedule and solve daily. |
|---|
| English weaker than expected | The most under-prepared part of the general ability paper. | Give it a daily slot of its own rather than folding it into general reading. |
|---|
| General knowledge uneven across subjects | One or two areas covered and the rest absent. | Rotate the subjects rather than finishing one and stopping. |
|---|
| Guessing widely under the deduction | No attempt policy fixed before the paper. | Decide how narrow a guess must be before you take it, and rehearse it. |
|---|
| Board preparation not started | It cannot be prepared for after a written result. | Read widely, form views, and be able to talk about yourself and your interests. |
