CELPIP — How to prepare

From choosing the test to the score report

  1. Confirm the test the programme accepts IRCC accepts CELPIP-General for economic immigration and General LS for citizenship; Australia accepts General for most visas. Universities mostly do not accept it.
  2. Choose between CELPIP and IELTS General Training Both map to CLB. CELPIP is one computer sitting with recorded speaking and results in days; IELTS has a face-to-face speaking test and a paper option. Try the free sample of each.
  3. Practise everyday registers Emails to a manager or a neighbour, survey opinions, giving advice to a friend: the tasks are ordinary, and the marks are for handling them completely and appropriately.
  4. Rehearse speaking to a screen With preparation time of 30 to 60 seconds and a fixed answer window, a simple structure — situation, view, reasons, close — used every time removes the hesitation the raters hear.
  5. Use the on-screen tools The word counter and spell-check in writing are allowed; use them to hit the 150–200 range and remove slips.
  6. Book with the timeline in mind Results in two to four business days; arrive 45 minutes early on the day, since check-in closes 15 minutes before the start and latecomers forfeit the fee.

The listening test reads as much as it listens

Answer choices in the listening component and the questions in speaking must be read on screen, and in several listening parts the questions appear only after the audio has played once. Candidates who prepare only by listening are surprised by how much reading speed the component demands.
