Student Visa Process — the questions officers ask

Why this course and this university
The officer wants a reason that connects the applicant’s background to the programme — a subject continued, a specialisation chosen, a named faculty or facility. A generic answer about rankings suggests an agent’s choice rather than the applicant’s.
Who is paying, and how
The figures on the I-20 and the funds shown should match; the sponsor’s relationship, income and the source of any recent deposit should be explainable in a sentence. A loan needs a sanction letter; a scholarship a letter naming the amount.
What happens after graduation
The F-1 is a non-immigrant visa, and the officer is required to be satisfied that the applicant intends to depart. Optional Practical Training is a lawful part of the programme and may be mentioned, but a plan that begins and ends with staying in the US is the commonest reason for refusal.
Academic record and test scores
Transcripts, degree certificates and the standardised test scores the school required may be asked for; gaps and changes of field should have short explanations ready.
Ties to India
Family, property, a job to return to or a family business: anything that makes return more likely than not. Officers ask about it directly and draw inferences from the whole file.

The UK does not normally interview students but reserves a credibility interview for cases where the sponsor’s assessment or the documents raise doubt. Canada asks the same questions in the letter of explanation, which should say what will be studied, why in Canada, how it fits the applicant’s history, how it is funded and why the applicant will leave at the end. Australia asks them in the Genuine Student statement, with evidence for each claim, and may interview.
