United States
The consular interview is the decision. The officer reads the I-20, asks about the course and the school, the funding and the plan after graduation, and looks for ties that make departure likely. Interview wait times vary by season and post, and applying early is the only defence against a slot that falls after the course starts.
United Kingdom
The sponsor has already assessed the applicant when it issues the CAS; the Home Office checks the funds, the English and the documents. The Immigration Health Surcharge is paid with the application and gives access to the NHS. A visa longer than the course is normal, and the Graduate visa follows without a job offer.
Canada
Since 2024 most applicants need a provincial or territorial attestation letter tied to the province’s allocation, obtained through the institution after accepting the offer and paying tuition. The letter of explanation is where the study plan and the intention to leave are set out. Eligibility for the post-graduation work permit depends on the programme and on rules in force when the study permit was applied for.
Australia
The Genuine Student requirement replaced the earlier genuine temporary entrant test: the applicant must show that study is the primary purpose, with evidence about circumstances at home, the course’s value and, where relevant, immigration history. Applications lodged from 14 November 2025 are processed under Ministerial Direction 115, which orders processing by provider and sector.
