Rehearsal

Student Visa Process — rehearsing the interview and the statements

A routine

  1. Write the five answers in two sentences each Course and university; funding; plan after graduation; academic record; ties. If an answer needs a paragraph, the case has a weakness to fix, not a script to lengthen.
  2. Rehearse aloud with a stranger to the file Someone who does not know the plan should ask follow-ups — why this university over one at home, what the sponsor earns, what the job after the degree would be — and note where the answers hesitate.
  3. Check every figure against the documents The tuition on the I-20, the balance on the statement, the loan amount, the sponsor’s income: the officer has the papers open.
  4. Draft the Canadian letter and the Australian statement to a page Purpose, fit, funding, return; then read them as an officer with two minutes would.
  5. Prepare the documents in the order they will be asked for Passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt, I-20, then the financial and academic evidence; fumbling for papers reads as unprepared.

What not to rehearse

Memorised answers are heard as memorised. The aim of rehearsal is to know the facts of one’s own case well enough to answer any question about them plainly, not to perform a script. Officers are trained to ask the question the script did not anticipate.
