MAT — How to prepare
MAT does not need a preparation of its own. Its aptitude sections are covered by any management-entrance preparation, its timing is generous, and its distinguishing section rewards a daily business newspaper rather than a study plan. What it does offer, and what candidates under-use, is frequency — several cycles a year means an early attempt genuinely costs nothing.
A plan that uses the frequency
- Prepare with a conventional management-entrance base. Quantitative, reasoning and verbal, shared with CAT and the others.
- Add data sufficiency practice. A full section here, with its own technique.
- From day one — read a business newspaper daily. It serves the MAT business environment section, CMAT general awareness, XAT general knowledge and every interview.
- Attempt an early cycle as calibration. With several a year, nothing is lost by an early attempt.
- Between cycles, work only on the weakest section. Targeted improvement between attempts is what the frequency is for.
- Use the generous timing to verify. Practise checking rather than rushing, since the clock allows it.
What candidates miss
- Not using multiple cycles — the most under-used advantage this examination offers.
- Skipping the business environment section entirely — it may not score, but institutions consider it and interviews draw on it.
- Rushing a paper that does not require it — timing is generous; use it for accuracy.
- Neglecting data sufficiency — a full section with a learnable technique.
- The first cycle — calibration
- Taken early, seriously, and treated as a diagnostic. It identifies the section actually limiting your overall score, which mocks approximate and an attempt establishes.
- The interval — targeted work
- The gap between cycles is long enough for genuine improvement in one area, which is what makes the frequency valuable. A second cycle attempted without changing anything is simply a repeat measurement.
- The habit — a business newspaper
- Daily, from the beginning, covering the environment section here and paying into every other management entrance and interview you will face.
- The technique — data sufficiency
- A short block of dedicated practice, since it is a full component here and absent from CAT preparation entirely.
The most under-used feature of this examination is simply that it happens more than once. Candidates habitually treat each cycle as a standalone event, prepare uniformly, and sit whichever administration falls closest to their application deadlines. Treating the cycles as a sequence — attempt, diagnose, target, re-attempt — converts a conventional aptitude test into something much closer to a coached improvement process, at the cost of an additional fee.
Do not rush a paper that gives you time
The characteristic MAT error is carelessness rather than difficulty: a candidate trained on tighter papers works at a pace the clock does not require and loses marks to avoidable slips. The correct adjustment is deliberate — decide in advance that you will use the available time to verify numerical setups, and rehearse that in your mocks.
