MAT — Using mock tests as a measurement

Candidates used to skip the business environment section because older cycles left it out of the composite score. AIMA now counts all five sections in the overall score, and the same material serves the interview stage, where being unable to discuss a current business development is a visible weakness.

What to review

  • Section-wise accuracy across all five sections — the overall score is what institutions shortlist on.
  • Data sufficiency accuracy specifically — a technique-dependent question type worth isolating.
  • Time left over — MAT timing is generous; unused time should be spent verifying rather than left idle.
  • Business environment coverage — even where it does not score, it matters later.

What to do with a MAT mock

  1. Take all five sections Including the business environment section, which counts in the overall score. Skipping it in practice guarantees meeting it cold.
  2. Score the five sections separately Shortlisting rests on the overall score, and a weak section drags it in a way an aggregate figure obscures.
  3. Isolate data sufficiency accuracy A technique-dependent component where errors cluster for a specific reason — usually solving rather than judging — and are quickly corrected once identified.
  4. Note the time you did not use Generous timing means you should finish with a margin. That margin belongs to verification, and rehearsing its use is worth doing.
  5. Compare across cycles if you sit more than one The section that limited you last time is the section the interval should have addressed.

Because MAT runs several times a year, the mock schedule can be lighter than for a single-cycle examination and still be sufficient. A handful of full papers before your first attempt establishes pacing and exposes the weak section; the real diagnostic is then the attempt itself, and the real preparation is what you do in the weeks before the next cycle. That is a materially different rhythm from CAT and it is worth planning deliberately rather than importing a CAT mock calendar.

Practise in the delivery mode you will sit

Where computer-based, internet-based and paper-based modes are offered, they differ in how you navigate, how you do rough work and how quickly you can return to a marked question. Choose your mode early and practise in it, rather than discovering the differences in the examination.
