LIC ADO 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Stipend and Salary, Eligibility and Free LIC ADO Mock Tests

LIC ADO recruits Apprentice Development Officers — the field officers who recruit and lead LIC’s agents — through zone-wise notifications, a prelims, a 160-mark mains and an interview of 40 marks. The last recruitment, notified on 21 January 2023, offered 9,394 posts across the eight zones, held its prelims on 12 March 2023 and its mains on 8 April 2023, and paid a stipend of about ₹51,500 a month during apprenticeship before a basic pay of ₹35,650 on appointment.

The paper is easier than the AAO paper and the syllabus shorter, but the job is different: a Development Officer is measured on the business the agency unit produces, and the interview and the insurance-marketing section of the mains both look for that aptitude. This guide reads the 2023 notification, which is the pattern any 2026 notice will start from.

Zonal notifications

Each zone — Delhi, Kanpur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Patna — issues its own notice with its own vacancies and the division-wise list. A candidate applies to one zone; the local-language preference and the rural or urban post are decided there.

Overview

What LIC ADO is, and who it suits

A Development Officer recruits life-insurance agents, trains them and builds a unit whose business earns the officer incentives on top of salary. LIC recruits into the role from three pools — open-market graduates, its own agents with a business record, and its employees — and the notification reserves shares for each. Open-market candidates go through a prelims and mains; agents and employees sit the mains alone.

Recruitment is infrequent: 2019, 2020 (a smaller exercise) and 2023, each notified zone by zone in January with the examinations by April. A candidate should read the 2023 notification of their own zone, because vacancies, rural and urban posts and the local-language preference are set at zonal level. The examination itself is common.

Who LIC ADO suits

  • Graduates who want a field and sales career with a public insurer — the job is agency management, not office administration.
  • LIC agents with the business record the notification requires — they skip the prelims and are judged on the mains and interview.
  • Candidates strong in general aptitude but without a banking-level quantitative base — the paper is lighter than AAO or bank PO.
  • People with a local base — knowledge of the local language is desirable and postings are within the zone applied to.

Application to apprenticeship

How LIC ADO runs, from the zonal notice to the mains, the interview and the year on stipend

The steps follow the 2023 zonal notifications and the way that cycle ran.

The LIC ADO process

  1. Choose a zone and register Applications are online through the link on licindia.in → Careers, within about three weeks — 21 January to 10 February in 2023. The candidate picks the zone, the division and the category (open market, agent, employee) and uploads a photograph, signature, thumb impression and declaration.
  2. Pay the fee ₹750 plus transaction charges, or ₹100 for SC and ST, online; the application counts only when payment succeeds.
  3. Prelims for open-market candidates Call letters from about a week before; a one-hour paper of three timed sections; twenty times the vacancies per category shortlisted. Agents and employees skip this stage.
  4. Mains for all categories A composite two-hour paper of 160 questions; no negative marking; the insurance-marketing section is the largest at 60 marks.
  5. Interview Forty marks; final merit is mains plus interview, with post-graduation and then age as tie-breakers.
  6. Medical, bond and apprenticeship Medical fitness, a ₹3 lakh indemnity bond, then a one-year apprenticeship on stipend before appointment as Probationary Development Officer; confirmation depends on the agency business built.

How the marks work

No negative marking at either stage. Prelims English is qualifying and prelims marks are for shortlisting only. The mains is a single 120-minute sitting without section timers, so time can be moved between sections — the opposite of the AAO mains. Agents and employees sit the mains and interview only.

Study plan

How to prepare for LIC ADO

LIC ADO is a lighter paper than AAO, and a candidate with a general competitive-exam base can prepare it in eight to ten weeks. The plan front-loads the 60-mark insurance-marketing section, which is the largest and the least likely to have been prepared before.

A ten-week LIC ADO plan.
WeeksFocusWhat to do
1–3Reasoning and numerical abilityPuzzles, syllogism, coding, series, arithmetic, simplification; 20-minute sectional tests for the prelims.
1–10English and current affairsDaily newspaper; RC, cloze and error practice twice a week; a monthly current-affairs digest.
3–7Insurance and financial marketingLIC’s plans and history, IRDAI, insurance terms, agency and marketing concepts, government insurance schemes, the financial sector; a notes file revised weekly.
7–10MocksPrelims mocks with timers, mains mocks as a single two-hour sitting; attempt everything.

What matters most

  • The insurance and marketing section — sixty of 160 mains marks, and the section that the interview also probes.
  • Attempting every question — there is no penalty.
  • Local language and the interview — the job is agency-building in the zone; the interview looks for that.
