APPSC Group 1 — How the paper is structured

What each stage contributes to the final 825.
StageFormatCounts?What it decides
Screening testTwo objective papers, 240 marksNoWho writes the mains, in a ratio the commission fixes
Mains — Telugu and EnglishDescriptive, qualifyingNoWhether the rest of the mains is evaluated at all
Mains — Papers I to VDescriptive, 750 marksYesMost of the rank
InterviewPersonality test, 75 marksYesMovement within a band, and service allotment at the margin

The consequence of that table is a planning rule. The mains is worth ten times the interview and the screening is worth nothing at all, so preparation time should go to writing practice long before the screening result arrives. Candidates who begin mains preparation after clearing the screening are learning to write descriptive answers in the weeks when they should be revising them.

Rules worth reading twice

  • The penalty applies to the screening only — a third of a mark per wrong answer in the objective papers. The descriptive mains carries none.
  • The language papers are qualified individually — each at 40, 35 or 30 per cent by category, before the marked papers count.
  • The interview ratio is two per vacancy — so roughly half of those interviewed are not selected. The mains rank going in is most of the result coming out.
  • The screening is set in English and translated — the English version is authentic where the two differ.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

APPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.
