APPSC Group 2 — How the paper is structured

What each stage contributes.
StageFormatCounts?What it decides
Screening testObjective, 150 questionsNoWho writes the mains, in a ratio the commission fixes
Mains Paper IObjective, 150 questionsYes — 150 marksHalf the ranking
Mains Paper IIObjective, 150 questionsYes — 150 marksThe other half
Computer proficiency testPractical, 100 marksNo — qualifyingWhether a ranked candidate can be appointed

The consequence is a planning rule with two halves. The mains is the whole of the rank, so both papers deserve equal weight and the state history section deserves the weight of a subject. The proficiency test adds nothing to the rank but removes candidates from it, so it deserves enough practice to pass comfortably and no more.

Rules worth reading twice

  • The penalty applies at both stages — a third of a mark per wrong answer in the screening and in the mains. Three wrong answers cancel one right one.
  • Qualifying marks are on the aggregate — 40, 35 and 30 per cent by category — not per paper.
  • The proficiency test is qualifying by category — 40 for OC, 35 for BC, 30 for SC, ST and disabled candidates, out of 100.
  • Post and zone are allotted at verification — preferences submitted then, under the reservation roster, decide which of fifty-nine post codes a rank becomes.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

APPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.
