BPSC Combined Competitive Examination — What the syllabus covers

Preliminary — general studies
General science; national and international current events; Indian history with the salient features of Bihar’s; general geography and Bihar’s geographical divisions and rivers; Indian polity and economy with the changes in Bihar’s economy since independence; the national movement and Bihar’s role; general mental ability.
Mains — General Hindi
Essay, grammar, syntax and summary at matriculation level; qualifying at 30 per cent and not counted.
Mains — general studies I
Modern Indian history and culture with Bihar’s role in the national movement and the Santhal, Birsa and Champaran movements; current events; statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams.
Mains — general studies II
Indian polity, the Indian economy and Indian geography with Bihar’s polity, economy and geography; the role and impact of science and technology in India’s development, with Bihar in view.
Mains — essay
Essays in Hindi or English on given topics, 300 marks, counted in full.
Mains — optional
One of 34 subjects as a two-hour objective paper of 100 marks that qualifies but does not count; for the child development, financial administrative and protection officer posts, a descriptive paper of 300 marks in the post’s listed subjects that replaces the essay in the count.

The advertisement states the preliminary topics and the scheme; the paper-wise mains syllabus is on the commission’s syllabus page, and the general studies I and II headings above are from that scheme as it has stood across recent cycles. The essay and optional papers have no topic list beyond the subject.
