Tamil Nadu Departmental Examinations — How to prepare

From service rules to pass

  1. Identify the codes from your rules, or from the post you want The tests prescribed for a post are in its service rules. A candidate for that post can sit them now.
  2. Read the scheme in Annexure II The pattern, the split, the with-books parts and the pass marks are set out per test code.
  3. Get the allowed books The commission publishes the list. For the criminal-law tests, the new codes.
  4. Register once, apply in the window About three weeks, online only, ₹200 a test plus ₹30. Government servants pay and reclaim.
  5. Prepare each part to its own pass mark Recall for the without-books objective part; navigation for the with-books descriptive part.

Two sessions a year, so a failed part costs six months

A split test must be passed in both parts; a candidate who passes the objective part and fails the descriptive sits the whole test again in the next session. Prepare both parts to a margin.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TNPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years — the Tamil eligibility component itself is a recent addition. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.
