Tamil Nadu Departmental Examinations — Reading previous papers properly

The commission’s previous-papers page holds the May 2016, May 2017 and December 2017 sessions. Its keys page holds the final keys for every session from December 2018 to December 2023. For each recent session it releases the descriptive question papers alongside the tentative keys, which is where a candidate for a written test finds the last three years of actual papers.

How to practise

  • For a descriptive with-books test, work the released papers with the allowed books — the skill is finding the provision under time, and it can only be rehearsed with the permitted material on the desk.
  • For an objective test, use the keys with the old papers — the 2016 and 2017 papers with their keys show the question habits; the recent keys show the answer distribution.
  • For the criminal-law tests, work only from the new codes — the papers before December 2024 were set on the old Acts and are useful for question style, not content.
