The planning rule is simple: the rank is one handwritten paper. A candidate who clears the prelims comfortably and has never written a timed 200-word answer arrives at the only paper that counts without the skill it tests. Descriptive practice belongs in month one.

Rules worth reading twice

  • The blank-answer deduction in the prelims — half a mark per blank, none per wrong answer, option E for the unknown.
  • Every minimum is the same for every community — 90 in the prelims, 40 in Paper I, 90 in Paper II.
  • The shortlist is separate for each group — a candidate may be shortlisted for both mains, and pays for both.
  • The generic scheme page is stale — the notification governs.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TNPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years — the Tamil eligibility component itself is a recent addition. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.
