The common preliminary examination by unit, with the questions the syllabus annexure allots. Two hundred questions in all.

Mains — Paper I, Tamil eligibility test
Tamil at SSLC standard: grammar, comprehension, composition and literature. Descriptive, three hours, 100 marks, 40 to pass, and marked first.
Mains — Paper II, General Studies
The prelims syllabus at greater depth, in prose: the history, culture and movements of Tamil Nadu; the Indian polity and the state’s administration; the Indian economy and the development administration of Tamil Nadu; general science and geography; and current affairs. Written across three parts in Tamil or English, with the Part B language answers in the chosen language.
