TNPSC Group 2A

TNPSC Group 2A fills the larger and lower of the two tiers in the Combined Civil Services Examination-II: Senior Revenue Inspector, Audit Inspector, Assistants and Accountants across departments, Junior Accountant, Executive Officer Grade-III, Lower Division Clerk and the other posts at pay levels 10 to 12. It is decided on an objective computer-based mains of 300 marks, and it is the recruitment most Tamil Nadu graduates first sit.

The 2026 cycle was live when this page was checked. Notification No. 07/2026 closed on 9 September 2026 for 803 Group IIA posts alongside 43 Group II posts, and the common preliminary examination is on 1 November 2026. There is no interview and never has been for this tier; what distinguishes it from Group II is the mains, which here is 200 objective questions rather than a descriptive paper.

Overview

What TNPSC Group 2A is, and who it suits

Group IIA is forty-seven post codes in the 2026 notification, 803 posts after the September addendum, spread across the revenue department’s Senior Revenue Inspectors district by district, the audit and accounts posts of the local fund and treasuries services, Assistants in a dozen departments, Junior Accountants, the town panchayats’ Executive Officers and Lower Division Clerks. The same prelims serves it and Group II; the shortlist for each mains is drawn separately at ten per vacancy.

The Group IIA mains is two papers. Paper I is the Tamil eligibility test at SSLC standard — descriptive, 100 marks, qualifying at 40 for every community — and Paper II is evaluated only for those who pass it. Paper II is a computer-based test of 200 questions for 300 marks in three hours: 150 on general studies at degree standard and 50 on general intelligence and reasoning at SSLC standard, with a minimum of 90. Paper II alone builds the rank list, and posts are allotted at counselling by rank and preference.

What separates Group 2A from Group 2

  • The mains is objective — a computer-based test of 200 questions. Group II’s mains is one descriptive paper of 300 marks, written by hand.
  • The posts are the ministerial tier — levels 10 to 12 — Assistants, Accountants, Revenue Inspectors, Clerks — against Group II’s levels 16 to 18.
  • The field is nineteen times larger — 803 posts against 43, and the shortlist at 1:10 means roughly eight thousand candidates in the mains.
  • Neither has an interview — Group IIA never did; Group II lost its oral test in 2024.

The prelims is the same paper as Group 2 — and a third of it is language

Every Group IIA candidate sits the common preliminary examination on 1 November 2026: 75 general studies questions, 25 aptitude, and 100 questions of general Tamil or general English at SSLC standard. The language section is half the paper by question count and the section that improves fastest. A candidate who prepares general studies alone has prepared for a third of the prelims.

Selection process

How TNPSC Group 2A selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Common preliminary examinationObjective, OMR — screening onlyOne paper of 200 questions and 300 marks in three hours, shared with Group II: general studies 75, aptitude 25, and general Tamil or general English 100. Minimum 90 for every community. Ten candidates per Group IIA vacancy proceed; the marks are then discarded.
Group IIA main examinationDescriptive Tamil paper, then an objective computer-based paperPaper I, the Tamil eligibility test at SSLC standard, qualifying at 40 out of 100 for every community. Paper II, a computer-based test of 200 questions for 300 marks in three hours — general studies 150 at degree standard, general intelligence and reasoning 50 at SSLC standard — with a minimum of 90. Paper I gates Paper II, and the generic scheme page is wrong about Paper II

Paper II is evaluated only for candidates who score 40 in the Tamil eligibility test; a differently-abled candidate may claim exemption. The commission’s generic scheme page shows a Group IIA Paper II with a language section and a different prelims minimum; Notification 07/2026 shows neither, and the notification governs.

The rules that decide who progresses

  • The prelims admits ten per vacancy — separately from Group II, and its marks are not counted.
  • Blank answers cost half a mark — There is no deduction for a wrong answer. But half a mark is deducted for every question left entirely blank — a candidate who does not know the answer must darken option E — and two marks for a wrong register number on a non-personalised sheet. Leaving a question unanswered is the one thing the commission penalises.
  • Paper II is on a computer — the commission holds the Group IIA mains as a computer-based test, unlike the OMR prelims. The 2026 mains was on 24 March.
  • Reasoning is a quarter of Paper II — fifty questions at SSLC standard — the most drillable block in the examination.
  • Ties go to the higher qualification — then to age, then to the earlier application.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TNPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years — the Tamil eligibility component itself is a recent addition. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.

Study plan

How to prepare for TNPSC Group 2A

A plan for a candidate sitting the prelims on 1 November 2026

  1. Give the language paper half your prelims time it is 100 of the 200 questions at SSLC standard, with published unit weights. It is where a general studies candidate is weakest and where marks move fastest.
  2. Darken option E, never leave a blank half a mark off per blank in the prelims; nothing off for a wrong answer.
  3. Prepare Paper I as a subject three hours of SSLC Tamil, 40 to pass, marked before Paper II is opened. In the 2025 cycle it was held nine days before the mains.
  4. Drill reasoning as a quarter of the mains fifty questions of general intelligence and reasoning at SSLC standard. Method, not reading.
  5. Build the Tamil Nadu units as the core of general studies the state’s economy, administration, history and culture carry 40 of the 75 prelims general studies questions and recur through Paper II.
  6. Rehearse on a screen Paper II is a computer-based test. Sit at least one full three-hour paper on a screen before the day.
  7. Rank your post preferences early forty-seven post codes across departments and districts. Counselling is by rank and preference; know the list before the shortlist.
