TGPSC Group 2 — Study material for this exam

One source per subject

  • Polity — a single standard reference on the Constitution and the political system, read twice with the second reading spent on constitutional bodies and centre-state relations.
  • Economy — a concepts text plus the state’s socio-economic publications for Telangana-specific figures.
  • History and culture — a modern India narrative for the national portion, and state board textbooks for Telangana’s social and cultural history.
  • Geography and environment — school-level physical geography upwards, then Indian and Telangana geography with rivers, projects and districts.
  • The movement — one standard account, plus a chronology you build yourself from past questions.

State board textbooks deserve a specific mention. For Telangana history, geography and civics they are written at close to the level the paper examines, they are internally consistent, and they are free. They are a better first source than a compiled guide, which is usually assembled from them anyway.

Notes should shrink

Whatever you read, the output should be a set of notes that gets shorter with each revision — a subject file that is forty pages after the first pass and five before the examination. Notes that stay the same length have not been revised; they have been rewritten.

What not to spend money on

  • A second guide for a subject you already have one for — a second source rarely adds coverage; it adds a second version of the same material to revise, which is the opposite of what an objective exam needs.
  • Monthly current-affairs magazines bought and stacked — useful only if read and reduced to notes. Unread issues are the most common unused purchase in state-exam preparation.
  • A separate book for the movement paper on top of the state textbooks — the textbooks and past papers cover it. A guide is worth buying only if you find the chronology genuinely hard to build alone.
  • A test series bought early — a test series earns its price in the last three months, when you have something to measure. Bought at the start, most of it expires unused.

A source list that fits an objective paper

  • One general studies source per subject, finished — objective papers reward reliable recall of standard material far more than they reward depth. Depth without completion loses marks to breadth with completion.
  • The state layer assembled rather than bought — from the commission’s past papers, state department pages and the state’s own statistical publications. There is no single book that covers this at exam depth.
  • A current-affairs note kept monthly, not daily — for an objective paper, a consolidated monthly review with state and national items together is far more revisable than a daily diary you will never reread.
  • A question bank, opened early — objective preparation should move to questions within days of starting a topic, because the paper tests recognition under time and reading alone does not build it.

The medium question is worth settling in the first week. Papers are set in English and Telugu, and candidates who read faster in Telugu often prepare in English out of habit and then read the paper slowly. Reading speed in the language you will actually sit the paper in is worth several questions, and it is trainable only by reading in that language from the start.
