UPSC CAPF — How to prepare
A candidate preparing for CAPF with general competitive-exam material will cover Paper 1 adequately and Paper 2 hardly at all. Two hundred marks of essay, precis and comprehension is not something objective practice develops, and the gap shows immediately in the mark sheet. Writing practice should start in the first month.
A four to six month plan
- Week one — check the physical and medical standards, and start training. Running, long jump and shot put. All improve gradually.
- From day one — one written piece a week, minimum. An essay or a precis, under time. Start before you feel ready; the skill accumulates slowly.
- From day one — follow security and governance news specifically. Internal security, border management, insurgency and development, human rights in policing. The examination’s recurring preoccupations.
- Months one to three — Paper 1 general studies. Polity, economy, history, geography, general science and mental ability. Conventional preparation serves well here.
- Month three — increase writing to twice weekly. And begin timing the full three-hour Paper 2 format.
- Month four — Paper 1 mocks and continued writing. With physical training maintained throughout.
- After the written examination — interview preparation. A hundred and fifty marks, drawing on the same security and governance awareness the essay paper rewards.
What separates successful candidates
- Regular writing practice — the single largest differentiator in this examination.
- Genuine engagement with security and rights questions — which serves the essay, the comprehension and the interview together.
- Physical preparation started early — rather than after the written result.
- Precis practice — a mechanical skill that improves quickly and is almost universally under-practised.
- The writing track
- The differentiator, and the one that has to run for the whole preparation rather than a phase of it. One written piece a week from the first week, rising to two or three, always under time and always read by someone. Nothing else in a CAPF plan produces as much marginal return.
- The reading track
- A newspaper daily, read specifically for the security, governance and rights strand rather than for general awareness. This single habit feeds Paper 1 current events, the Paper 2 essay, and the interview simultaneously.
- The physical track
- Started in week one and maintained continuously. Running to the prescribed distance and timing, plus long jump and shot put, which are technique events where a few sessions of actual practice matter more than general fitness.
- The general studies track
- Polity, economy, history, geography and science at standard graduate level. Necessary, finite, and the part of the preparation most likely to expand to fill the space that writing practice should have occupied.
A candidate arriving from Civil Services preparation has a real head start in Paper 1 and in the reading habit, and should be careful about one thing only: the CAPF essay is not a mains general studies answer. It is longer, it sustains a single argument rather than covering dimensions, and it rewards a clear position more than balanced coverage. Candidates trained to write two-hundred-word structured answers often produce an essay that reads as several answers placed end to end.
Check the standards before committing the year
Height, chest and vision requirements, and the running, jump and throw standards, are published in the notification and differ by gender and category. Reading them in your first week costs an hour. Discovering at the physical stage that you do not meet a fixed standard costs a year of preparation and a full application cycle.
