UPSC CAPF — Using mock tests as a measurement

Paper 1 responds well to conventional mock practice: timed papers, the correct deduction, and error analysis by subject. Paper 2 does not have a mock equivalent, and the substitute — writing full pieces under time and getting honest feedback — is the part of CAPF preparation most often skipped.

A weekly practice rhythm

  • One full Paper 1 mock — with the one-third deduction applied, analysed by subject rather than by score alone.
  • One full essay under time — on a past topic or a current security or governance question.
  • One precis — checked against the source for faithfulness and length discipline.
  • Physical training throughout — the efficiency test follows the written stage, and running and shot put standards take months to reach.

A practice week that matches the paper

  1. One timed Paper 1 mock A hundred and twenty-five questions in two hours with the one-third deduction applied, analysed by subject rather than by total.
  2. One full essay by hand Under time, on a past topic or a current security question, written on paper rather than typed — the exam is handwritten and stamina is part of what is being tested.
  3. One precis, checked properly Against the source, for faithfulness, proportion and length discipline. This is the component that improves fastest with feedback.
  4. One counter-argument exercise Take a position you hold and write the strongest case against it in three hundred words. It is the specific skill the syllabus names and the one least practised.
  5. Physical training throughout Running at the prescribed distance, plus long jump and shot put practice. The efficiency test follows the written stage and does not wait for you to get fit.

Get your written work read by someone willing to be blunt. The failure modes in a descriptive paper — assertions without support, paragraphs that repeat rather than advance, a conclusion that summarises instead of concluding — are close to invisible from the inside. A single honest reader over several months will do more for your Paper 2 score than any quantity of unreviewed writing, and writing that is never read tends to entrench habits rather than correct them.

Handwriting and time are part of the test

Three hours of continuous handwriting is unfamiliar to most candidates who have spent their preparation typing or reading. Practise on paper, at speed, and find out early whether your writing stays legible in the third hour. A well-argued answer that the examiner cannot read is marked as what it appears to be.

Practising an examination that is half objective and half written.
