Notes
UPSC CAPF — Study material for this exam
The general studies notes below serve Paper 1 well. For Paper 2, the material that matters is a newspaper read for argument, sustained attention to security and governance debates, and — above all — your own written output, which is the only thing that develops the skill the paper measures.
A weekly routine
- A newspaper daily, read for the security and governance strand in particular.
- One essay or precis a week under time, rising to two as the exam approaches.
- General studies revision from your own notes rather than from source books.
- Physical training on most days, to the standards in the notification.
- For Paper 1 — conventional general studies
- Polity, economy, modern history, geography and general science at graduate level, kept as revisable notes rather than as books to re-read. This material is widely available and interchangeable with what you would use for any other general studies paper.
- For the essay — positions, not notes
- One page per recurring theme: the strongest case each way, three or four concrete illustrations, and your own view. Five or six of these pages are worth more than a shelf of general studies material, because they are what you actually draw on under time.
- For comprehension and precis — practice, not reading
- Passages worked and checked. There is no body of knowledge to acquire here; there is only a technique that improves with repetition and feedback.
- For current affairs — a security lens
- The same newspaper other candidates read, filtered differently. Internal security developments, policing and rights questions, border and force-related news, and major governance debates.
Beyond the standard general studies shelf, this is an examination where a small amount of serious reading on internal security and civil liberties pays disproportionately. You are not being asked for expertise; you are being asked to write as someone who has thought about the trade-offs a central armed police force actually lives with. A handful of good long-form articles on policing, insurgency and rights, read properly and argued with, will show up in the essay, the counter-argument and the interview alike.
Keep the writing file, not the reading file
The most valuable document at the end of a CAPF preparation is the folder of your own written pieces with corrections on them. Re-reading your third essay beside your fifteenth is the clearest evidence of progress you will get, and the corrections themselves become the checklist you run through before submitting a paper.
Reading for an examination with a descriptive paper and a physical stage.| Paper | Read this | Do not spend time on |
|---|
| Paper 1 — general ability and intelligence | General studies at prelims breadth — polity, history, geography, economy, science, environment and current affairs — plus a reasoning and numerical block. | Depth beyond what a broad objective paper asks. |
|---|
| Paper 2 — general studies, essay and comprehension | Timed writing practice: essays on national and international issues, précis, comprehension and argument. This paper is descriptive and it is where candidates are separated. | Preparing it as a reading exercise. It is a writing examination. |
|---|
| The writing file | Your own timed answers and essays, dated, with the time taken noted. Reread monthly. | A reading file of collected material you will not revisit. |
|---|
| Security and internal affairs | Internal security, border management, the forces themselves and the current policy debate around them. | Assuming general current affairs covers this. It is a distinct and examinable layer. |
|---|
| Physical standards and medical | The events, standards and medical requirements in the notification, prepared for from the first month. | Leaving them until after the written result. |
