The consequence is a planning rule. The main paper is the largest component but not the only one, and the efficiency test is the cheapest marks on the sheet — a minute off a run time or a metre on a rope is worth more than the equivalent effort in general knowledge. For a Constable, 24 of the 100 come from three physical events that take an afternoon.

Rules that decide candidacies

  • The Tamil test is marked first and alone — below the threshold, the main sheet is not evaluated.
  • Thirty-five per cent in the main paper to qualify — then the top five per vacancy, plus everyone on the cut-off mark, proceed.
  • Measurement is by the half-centimetre — and rounded — 169.8 becomes 170, 169.6 becomes 169.5. Appeal on the day is allowed.
  • Zero stars is not elimination — a candidate who scores nothing in one event continues to the next; the efficiency test removes no one, it only ranks.
  • Departmental SI candidates are exempt from measurement only — under the addendum they sit the same written, endurance and efficiency tests as everyone else.
