Tamil Nadu Police — How to prepare

A twelve-month plan

  1. Months one to three — Tamil and the track Tenth-standard Tamil as a subject; general knowledge from the board’s syllabus headings; and a physical programme that starts with the endurance run and adds the three events. Rope climbing takes months to learn from nothing.
  2. Months four to six — the main paper General knowledge with the state layer; Part B skills drilled separately for Sub-Inspector; psychology from the archived papers for the Grade-II posts.
  3. Months seven to nine — papers and stars under the clock Weekly main papers, fortnightly Tamil papers, weekly measured events against the star table. Certificates for special marks assembled in the forms the notification prescribes.
  4. Months ten to twelve — hold for the planner date Maintenance. The board’s planner puts the next recruitments in December 2026 and February 2027, tentatively; the 2025 cycles took a year from notification to written result and are still running.

What the 2025 cycles taught

  • The scheme can change after you apply — the Sub-Inspector addendum rewrote the marks allocation seven months into the cycle. Read every addendum the board publishes.
  • Results can be withdrawn — the Sub-Inspector shortlist was published and then held for correction. A published list is not final until the board says so.
  • The Tamil-medium preference is litigated — a High Court writ appeal governs who qualifies for it in the current Constable cycle. Hold the certificates the notification asks for.
  • Departmental candidates now compete on the same paper — for Sub-Inspector, since the addendum — with the same endurance and efficiency standards as open candidates.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TNPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years — the Tamil eligibility component itself is a recent addition. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.
