TGPSC Group 1 — How the paper is structured

The shape Group 1 has held across recent cycles. Paper count, marks and duration are set by the notification for your cycle — confirm every figure there.
StageFormatCounts towards meritWhat it decides
PrelimsObjective general studies and mental abilityNoWho is called to the mains, in a ratio the commission fixes
Mains — language paperDescriptive, qualifyingNoWhether the rest of your mains is evaluated at all
Mains — marked papersDescriptive, written by handYesAlmost the whole of your rank

The consequence of that table is a planning rule. The mains is worth everything and the prelims is worth nothing at all, so preparation time should go to writing practice long before the prelims result arrives. Candidates who begin mains preparation after clearing the prelims are preparing for a descriptive examination in the weeks when they should be revising for it.

What the descriptive format actually demands

  1. Handwriting speed, sustained for three hours A mains paper asks for more writing than most graduates have done in years. This is trainable, and it takes months.
  2. Answers built to a structure A brief introduction, a body organised in labelled parts, and a conclusion that answers the question asked. Markers reward visible structure because it makes the argument checkable.
  3. Evidence that is specific A named committee, a year, a scheme, a figure from the state’s own economic publications. Specificity is what separates a scoring answer from a fluent one.
  4. Discipline about the word limit Overwriting one answer costs the marks of the answer you then leave unattempted. Timed practice is the only way to internalise the limit.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TGPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.

What the format costs you, in the order it costs it

  • The paper is written by hand, continuously, for hours — and the last answer is written by a hand that has already been writing for two and a half of them. Candidates lose marks at the end of papers rather than at the start, and the fix is physical practice rather than more reading.
  • Every marked paper is descriptive — so there is no partial credit for recognising the right option. An answer either exists on the page or it does not, which makes a blank the most expensive thing in the examination.
  • The word limit is a scoring instrument — an answer that runs long is not marked more generously; it consumes the minutes of a later answer instead. Timed practice is what stops the limit being theoretical.
  • Nothing after the papers can rescue them — the scheme notified for the current cycle carries no interview, so the six marked papers are the whole of the merit list. A weak paper is not recoverable at a later stage, because there is no later stage that carries marks.

One structural asymmetry is worth planning around explicitly. Prelims marks are discarded once the mains list is published, so effort spent moving a prelims score from comfortable to excellent returns nothing at all. The same hours spent on handwritten answer practice move a number that survives into the merit list. Candidates rarely believe this in month two and always believe it in month eleven.
