TGPSC Group 1 Study Material

The reading list divides cleanly. The national layer is well served by standard material; the state layer has to be assembled, and assembling it is most of the advantage available in this exam.

Notes

TGPSC Group 1 — Study material for this exam

The national layer

  • Polity and the Constitution — one standard reference, read twice, with the constitutional bodies and centre-state provisions known well enough to write about without notes.
  • Modern Indian history and the national movement — a single narrative source rather than several, so the chronology holds together when you write it out.
  • Economy — the concepts, plus the current Economic Survey and Budget read for direction rather than memorised for figures.
  • Geography and environment — physical geography from a school-level text upwards, then Indian geography with resources and agriculture.
  • Science and technology — current applications and developments rather than textbook science, plus arithmetic practice for the data interpretation component.

The Telangana layer

  • State board textbooks — the most reliable single source for Telangana history, geography and civics, written at close to the level the paper asks.
  • The state’s own statistical and economic publications — the socio-economic outlook and departmental reports, for figures you can cite in a mains answer.
  • A movement chronology built by you — from past papers and a standard account, kept to a few pages, revised weekly.
  • A state current-affairs source — a Telangana newspaper or the state’s own releases, read alongside national current affairs rather than instead of them.

Verify anything you plan to quote

Mains answers gain marks for specific schemes, committees and figures, and lose credibility when those are wrong. Take numbers from the state’s published documents rather than from coaching compilations, and check that a scheme you cite is still running before you build an answer around it.

Assembling the Telangana layer from primary sources

  • The state’s own statistical and economic publications — the socio-economic outlook and statistical abstract published by the state carry district-level figures on agriculture, irrigation, power and demography that make a mains answer specific rather than general.
  • Government orders and department pages — for how a scheme is actually structured rather than how a summary describes it. Department sites hold the guidelines that answer “how does this work” questions.
  • The commission’s own archive — past papers, syllabus documents and notifications. This is the only source that tells you what has actually been asked rather than what could be.
  • State-published history and culture material — for the dynasties, monuments, literature and crafts that national history books cover in a paragraph and the mains examines in a full question.
  • Contemporary reportage for the movement — read alongside a single narrative account, so the agreements are read in their own words rather than through somebody’s summary of them.

One source per layer, read twice

The failure mode in Group 1 reading is not too little material; it is four half-read books on the same subject. A single source finished and revised twice produces a chronology you can write out. Four sources sampled produce a set of impressions that collapse the moment a question asks for order and detail.
