TNPSC Group 1 — How the paper is structured

What each stage contributes to the final 850.
StageFormatCounts?What it decides
PreliminaryOne objective paper, 300 marksNoWho writes the mains — twenty per vacancy
Mains Paper IDescriptive Tamil, 100 marksNoWhether Papers II to IV are evaluated
Mains Papers II to IVDescriptive, 750 marksYesMost of the rank
Interview100 marks, no minimumYesThe order among candidates the mains ranked close

The mains is worth seven and a half times the interview and the prelims is worth nothing, so preparation time goes to writing practice long before the prelims result. But the interview is called at two or three per vacancy with no floor, which means roughly half of those interviewed are not selected — and among candidates within a few mains marks of one another, the board decides.

Rules worth reading twice

  • The blank-answer deduction — half a mark for every unanswered question in the prelims. Option E exists to be darkened.
  • The mains minimum is on the aggregate of Papers II to IV — 300 for general candidates and 225 for reserved communities — and the commission’s generic scheme page shows older figures.
  • Paper I is in Tamil only — and Papers II to IV in one chosen medium, Tamil or English.
  • No waiting list — unfilled vacancies are carried forward.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TNPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years — the Tamil eligibility component itself is a recent addition. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.
