TNPSC Group 1 — How to prepare

A twelve-month plan

  1. Months one to three — the state, written The economy and development administration of Tamil Nadu, the state’s history, culture and movements — the ninety-question core of the prelims and the spine of all three mains papers. One handwritten answer a day from the first week.
  2. Months four to six — polity, the national layer and Tamil Indian polity at its forty-question weight, the national movement, science and geography; and SSLC Tamil as a subject.
  3. Months seven to nine — papers under the clock Fortnightly prelims papers with the blank rule; weekly descriptive papers from the commission’s archive; monthly Tamil papers.
  4. Months ten to twelve — hold and sharpen Maintenance rather than new material, with the interview file — your form, your district, the state’s debates — built alongside.

What the recent cycles taught

  • Dates move — the 2026 prelims was postponed three weeks by addendum. Prepare to a routine, not to a date.
  • Vacancies grow after notification — 26 became 46 by addendum in the current cycle; 70 posts in 2025. The number that matters is the one at the prelims result.
  • The mains follows six months after the prelims — June to December in 2025. That interval is when descriptive practice pays.
  • Fifteen months from notification to final list — in the 2025 cycle. Plan preparation as a long project.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TNPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years — the Tamil eligibility component itself is a recent addition. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.
