TGPSC Group 4 — How the paper is structured

The structure Group 4 has used in recent cycles. Question counts, marks, duration and the negative marking rule are set by your notification — confirm them there.
PaperContentFormatWhat decides your score
Paper IGeneral Studies and General AbilitiesObjectiveBreadth of recall, and the Telangana-specific block
Paper IISecretarial AbilitiesObjectiveSpeed and accuracy on reasoning, arithmetic, comprehension and computers

With a field this large, the cutoff sits high and the difference between selection and near-miss is a handful of marks. Those marks are almost never found in the general studies paper, where every candidate has partial knowledge of the same topics. They are found in Paper II, where preparation converts directly into accuracy.

Exam-day discipline for a thin margin

  1. Finish Paper II clean rather than fast A careless error in arithmetic or rearrangement costs as much as an unknown fact in general studies, and it is entirely avoidable.
  2. Know your negative marking rule It decides whether an educated guess in general studies is worth making. Settle it from the notification well before the day.
  3. Do not leave the computer questions to the end They are the quickest marks in the paper. Take them early while you are fresh.
  4. Read the comprehension passage once, properly Rereading a passage under time pressure is the most common way candidates lose minutes they needed elsewhere.

Confirm the structure against your own notification

TGPSC revises paper structure, marks, syllabus detail and eligibility between recruitment cycles, and has done so more than once in recent years. Everything here describes the shape the recruitment has held; the notification for the cycle you are sitting is the document that decides it. Read it end to end before you plan around any figure.

Planning around a thin margin

  • Two papers means no hiding place — with only two components, a weak paper is half your result. There is no third paper to average against and no interview to recover in.
  • The field is very large — Group 4 attracts more applicants than any other TGPSC recruitment, which compresses the gap between adjacent ranks. Small numbers of marks move a candidate a long way in the list.
  • Speed is worth more than in the higher groups — because the questions are individually easier, more candidates can answer them, and the differentiator becomes how many you get through accurately.
  • Tie-breaking is governed by rule, not by preference — where candidates finish level, the notification and the service rules decide the order. Read that clause rather than assuming it.

One consequence deserves stating plainly: in a recruitment this crowded, the marginal hour is better spent raising accuracy on questions you can already almost do than on learning a new topic. A candidate who converts near-misses into marks moves further up a compressed list than one who adds a subject they will answer two questions from.
