TGPSC Group 4 — Reading previous papers properly

Work the papers in two passes. First to time, as a mock, to establish your real pace. Then question by question, marking each wrong answer as a gap in knowledge, a misreading, or a calculation slip. In Group 4 the third category is usually the largest, and it is the one that responds fastest to attention.

What the archive shows

  • The secretarial abilities paper barely varies — the same families of reasoning question, the same arithmetic topics, the same comprehension format. This is what makes it drillable.
  • The Telangana share of the general studies paper is large and stable — geography, history, culture, state policies and the movement together account for a substantial block every cycle.
  • Current affairs are drawn from a recent window — which tells you when compilation should start rather than how far back to read.
  • The computer questions stay basic — office applications, internet concepts and elementary hardware. The level does not rise between cycles.
  • Papers labelled TSPSC are the same examination — the commission was renamed in 2024; the papers before that are current practice material.

Work the secretarial paper twice as often as the general one

General studies papers have limited replay value once you have read the answers, because those questions will not repeat. The secretarial abilities paper is the opposite: its question families repeat exactly, so re-working an old paper months later is genuine practice rather than recall. Keep the general studies papers for analysis and the secretarial papers for drilling.

Turning past papers into a secretarial abilities drill

  1. Pull every abilities question out of every paper you can find. Across groups and across years. They are interchangeable, because the question forms are stable even when the topics are not.
  2. Sort them into the five families. Mental ability, logical reasoning, comprehension, sentence re-arrangement, arithmetic. You now have five drill sets rather than a pile of papers.
  3. Time yourself per family, not per paper. Twenty questions from one family against a clock tells you where your seconds are going. A mixed paper hides it.
  4. Rebuild the slowest family from scratch. Learn the standard method for each question form in it, then redo the same set. The second timing is the measurement that matters.
  5. Return to mixed sets only once each family is fast. Mixed practice tests selection between methods, which is a different skill and worth nothing until the methods themselves are quick.

Keep the arithmetic questions separate from the rest even inside the abilities set. They are the family that most rewards mechanical fluency — tables, fraction-to-percentage conversions, squares — and the one where a candidate can gain seconds on every single question rather than on a few. Fifteen minutes of calculation drill a day changes a Group 4 score more reliably than an hour of general studies revision does.
