APPSC Group 4 — Using mock tests as a measurement

The single most useful habit a Group 4 mock can build is the decision to leave a question blank. Score every practice paper with a third of a mark deducted per wrong answer, and then compare the marks you would have had with no guesses against the marks you actually got. Most candidates discover that their guessing is costing them, and that the fix is a rule — mark only what you can narrow to two options — rather than more knowledge.

A routine built around the scheme

  1. A full two-paper paper every week 300 questions in 300 minutes, scored with the penalty. Both papers, because both count.
  2. A language-only sectional midweek Thirty English and thirty Telugu questions in an hour. This is the fastest-improving half of the examination and the one candidates under-practise.
  3. A timed state-content test fortnightly Twenty questions on Andhra Pradesh geography, history, economy and the bifurcation. Finite material, and the block that most separates candidates.
  4. A practical session weekly A formatted document against the clock, a spreadsheet with formulas, a five-slide presentation. The proficiency test is a mock too.

Score the screening format separately if a large cycle is notified

When applicants exceed two hundred times the vacancies the commission adds a screening test of 150 questions — 100 general studies, 50 language — whose marks are then discarded. It has a different balance from the main examination, and a candidate who has only rehearsed the two-paper format will find the screening paper’s language section thinner and its general studies section heavier than expected.
